The actors Daniel Brühl and August Diehl are friends - on screen and in real life.

They are among the bests of their trade, but Daniel Brühl (“Good Bye, Lenin!”) and August Diehl (“23”) had never been in front of the camera together. Not until the director Achim von Borries had the idea to cast the two actors for his movie “Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken” - a true story that happened in summer 1927. Five friends spend a few days out in the country and get caught up in a round dance of love: Günther, coming from a rich family, loves Hans - and do does Günther’s sister, Hilde. Hilde’s friend Elli loves Paul and Paul, Günther’s friend, likes Hilde. The result is - no surprise: tragic.

During the time of the shooting, Diehl, 28, and Brühl, 25, became friends. For KulturSPIEGEL, they told uns - apart from one another - how they met for the first time and what friendship means to them.

“It will do them good to wait for me a little bit.”

By the end of the afternoon, August Diehl utters the sentence that does, finally, tell us at least a bit about him as a person: “Friends give you the opportunity to forget about yourself.” He spent a lot of time thinking before he could force himself to make this statement.

The actor Diehl does think a lot. Not only about his answers but also about the way he behaves. When he met Daniel Brühl for the first time, he didn’t leave anything to accident. Brühl, who was this other young German actor. They were supposed to spend a few days at a mill in the countryside of Berlin. Getting to know one another, do first improvisations for their project “Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken”. Diehl had never met Brühl before, he only knew him on screen, from “Das weiße Rauschen” and considered him to be quite impressing.

When the doorbell rand and Borries and Brühl were there to pick him up, Diehl sat in his kitchen, drinking coffee. “”It will do them good to wait for me a little bit,” he thought, went to the intercom and said “One moment”. Then he sat down in the kitchen again. He had another sip of coffee, and one more, and one more…when he went downstairs about ten minutes later, Brühl had left to go and buy cigarettes. When Brühl returned, a smile on his face, he asked: “Oh, did I keep you waiting?” This made Diehl smile.

During the shooting of the movie, the two of them put so much effort into making the project something special - after all, here were two actors who were “of the same kind” - that sometimes the mood threatened to change into disappointment. In the evenings, Diehl and Brühl would talk about their characters, discuss the script and got euphoric again, decided to perceive the next day of shooting as a new challenge. Diehl doesn’t know if you could say that there was already friendship existing between them at that time. It’s rather a case of life imitating art.

Diehl plays Günther, a self-confident but slightly worn-out 18 year old from a rich family. He spends the weekend at his parents’ house in the woods. They take walks, practice shooting and discuss life, which they don’t know a lot about yet. You often see the full moon in this movie and all emotions are taken very seriously.

At the end, Günther gets lost in his tragically beautiful kind of despair. Diehl liked this character immediately because it gave him the chance “to finally portray someone who was extroverted”. But Günther is also a typical Diehl character: sensitive, in a constant fever, balancing at the edge of insanity. Paul, on the other hand, seems rather connected to this world. It’s easy to imagine Brühl and Diehl, meeting up after the day of shooting is done, half themselves, half still in character. Diehl, the pondering radical, Brühl, the smirking enthusiast.
The friendship between August and Daniel started, when they stopped being Günther and Paul.

When do you consider someone a friend? “If you start thinking about yourself because of them,” answers Diehl. In the beginning, it was rather a case of scanning one another between him and Daniel, they didn’t embrace one another. Sharing the same humor plays a big role. Sitting around, being silent and then laughing about the silence. “I’m still curious about Daniel,” says Diehl. And that sounds like he just gave him an award.

Being among Diehl’s friends doesn’t seem to be a simple task. He says that he reconsiders and checks up on friendships at every meeting. Is he himself a good friend? “I think so, I’m a good listener.” In fact, he is silent a lot. Maybe that’s just because he’s tired of always being the center of attention. He is rehearsing for “Don Carlos” in Hamburg at the Schauspielhaus. Which role does he play? “Don Carlos,” answers Diehl. And he says it modestly on purpose, the way succesful people to it to make sure they’re not showing off.

Ever since he did his first movie in 1998, “23”, and was on stage in a play directed by Peter Zadek, he was considered to be a child prodigy among the young German actors. He didn’t waste his talent afterwards. He shows up on stage and on screen, but always a bit less than one would wish for.

He needs places to escape to, friends, where he can hide. A funny idea, Diehl and Brühl, the two celebrated actors, meet up for a beer in order to escape from their success.

The German film Wer wenn nicht wir (If not us, who?) by the director Andres Viel won the Silver Giraldillo at the SEFF 2011 (Sevilla European Film Festival) for “looking at the problems of ideology, youth and violence, offering a striking reading of recent European history, which has great relevance for all of us today”.

Besides, the SEFF jury has granted ex aequo the award for BEST ACTOR for August Diehl “in praise of a tremendous performance to represent a complex character at different stages of his life and to support a novel European actor of great talent.

*Ex Aequo means that August essentially tied for best actor with Michael Fassbender for Shame.

Just a short off-topic message to recommend you a worth watching film called Broderskab (Brotherhood). It won an award for Best Film at the International Rome Film Festival in 2009. It tells the story of a former soldier who joins a Neo-Nazi organization and fells in love with a member of the group. The film moves from hostility through admiration, to friendship and passion, however, it takes a darker turn at the end.

The main character, Lars, is performed by Thure Lindhardt who worked together with August Diehl in Was nützt die Liebe in Gedanken.

Better is Andres Veiel’s Wer wenn nicht wir (“If Not Us, Who”). This is a tough, narratively taut and quite depressing story, brilliantly acted by August Diehl and Lena Lauzemis in the lead roles, about an idealistic young 1960s publisher, Bernward Vesper, who fell in love, sort of, with an even more idealistic militant, Gudrun Ensslin. Ensslin was of course one third of the tripartite creators of the Rote Armee Fraktion, better known as the Baader-Meinhof gang. Prominent and less prominent West Germans in the early 1970s were murdered at their behest, something the recently deceased producer Bernd Eichinger reminded us of, with uncomfortable sexiness, in the 2008 The Baader Meinhof Complex. Veiel’s treatment is much soberer, exploring the strange, distorted trajectories these post-Nazi, highly gifted Germans were victims of in a culture which, then, still hadn’t quite understood what had hit it 25 years or so before. The wretched Vesper became an acid head and committed suicide in 1971 (as did Ensslin and Baader, in prison, six years later); what Veiel evokes so well - the earlier film didn’t - is the trauma contemporary Germany still feels about these troubling, wasted dreamers.

This is one fan's opinion about August Diehl's new film:

Just watched it in the Preview and I am - speechless. Seriously, honestly speechless. That movie is just perfect, to good to be true and everyone in it is at his oder her best. August is perfect as the evil, mean Konstantin and Daniel Brühl is just breathtakingly innocent and a total opposite of August's character....wow. The only not so good thing - they only get to share one single scene in the movie and that scene starts with Daniel's character saying: "Get that asshole away from here!" ("that asshole" being August's character...) .... if you can watch it, do so but it's not an easy movie, it makes you think think think.

Translation in English:
How was the work with Angelina Jolie?
Exciting, first of all. I was very excited from the first day on, I have to admit. We started right with a kiss scene and to establish this relationship. And afterwards I was very happy we started this way because all the following scenes went on much more natural. And Angelina Jolie and Philip Neuss took much of the excitement off of me.
Although I was the supportin actor I thought she supported me from the beginning and that she wanted my character to be important in the movie.

How did you get the role?
I had to go to a casting in Wahsington and did a few scenes with Angelina in a hotel suit, Philip Neuss was there, too. And than everything went on very fast. We started a month later.

How long have you been on the set?
I think ten days and a few pick-up days a half year later in winter in New York. I lived one and half month in NY.

Is there a difference between a German and an US production?
Oddly enough, no very big. I mean, it’s the same professionality, there are the same problems, maybe the only difference is the money. And that there are much more people working on the set.

Which director would you like to work with?I would’ve love to work with Schlesinger.I don’t know, there are so many great directors. For example Christopher Nolan, he is very exciting.

Lies your future in Europe or America?
I don’t know. These are all questions I don’t ask myself. No actor is asking himself what he wants to be in twenty years. It’s allways important what kind of story it is and wat kind of character. To be honest, I’m really looking forward to be 50 and to play roles like Michael Caine does. That’s certainly exciting.

What’s your favorite movie? Ah, there so many. But I really like Barry Linton. Because he’s got a very filmish thing wich only this medium has – a nearly opera style. He has an unbelievable patience with the boredom his own movie has. I think he’s fascinating. I think nearly every Kubrick film is extraordinary exciting.

Which German film would you recommend?
Oh God, I didn’t prepare for that question. I think in the last ten years there was so much going on in the German film.
Movies have been made which would’ve be impossible to make in the 90s. It’s difficult to pick one, there are so many! And in some of them I was involved, too.

Which of your own films are you especially proud of?
Hm, I think every film, even the not yet released ones, have their own kind of work and special experience. I still like „Love in Thoughts“ because this movie was very important to myself. And, of course, „23“ which was my first movie and wich is an experience I’ll never have again.

Diehl played a Nazi in Inglorious Basterds and Pitt took a liking to the European and championed him to play Jolie’s partner when director Phillip Noyce was casting the role.

Noyce tells NBC’s PopCornBiz blog, “Brad had said what a strong actor he was and we were looking for someone with no baggage. We wanted a fresh face - to keep the audience off guard.

“He was quite ruthless in Basterds… He’s just a great actor.”

The film's action focuses on the passage of a middle-class family in Berlin from the present to a thoroughly realistic, near future, a time of instability and big changes. Laura Kuper (Bernadette Heerwagen) must decide at the end of her studies between her desire for children and Hans (Daniel Bruehl), the great love of her life. Her sister Cecilia (Johanna Wokalek), meanwhile, is driven by her unrequited love for Konstantin (August Diehl) into the blackest depths of a newly emerging terrorism, and Philip, the youngest member of the family, sets off into a hopeless war for the last oilfields in Asia...

"While the story begins in 2010/11 in the near future and we are approaching 2025 towards the end of the film, this should not be regarded as a science fiction film," Doehmann stresses. "We move only very slowly into another world and have been very careful with the changes we show. We sat together with architects to come up with ideas on the changes to the architecture and will have this created using CGI effects."

In the impressive cast lineup, which also includes Susanne Lothar and Ernst Stoetzner as the parents, Bernadette Heerwagen is in fact the only person who had worked with Kraume before – in his 2004 Tatort episode Wo ist Max Graevert?

Daniel Bruehl and August Diehl, meanwhile, got a first taste of working with Kraume when they joined Heerwagen to appear in a 7-minute black-and-white 'mood trailer' Badlands produced to give potential financiers a visualization of the proposed atmosphere for the film.

Principal photography for the 49-day shoot began towards the end of August in Frankfurt, before moving to North Rhine-Westphalia in September, Berlin in October and wrapping in Austria's Tyrolean Alps at the end of October.

Indeed, the architecture of Frankfurt's city center proved to be just what Kraume was looking for to depict the near future. "It is the likes of which one doesn't see anywhere else in Germany and we were spoiled for choice with suitable locations in North Rhine-Westphalia to stand in for parts of Berlin,” Doehmanns says. “We found villas in Wuppertal that were just right as a home for the family in the film."

Meanwhile, he felt no concern about Kraume overdoing things by juggling the different roles as director, screenwriter and producer on the 6.5 million Euro project. "One can't expect him to be thinking like a producer during the shoot even though that will naturally be at the back of his mind," Doehmann explains.

"He is now 100% the director during the shoot," he continues. "In any case, things are made much easier by the relationship of personal trust which has been built up between us over the years. We have worked in the past on TV projects together and I had collaborated with Matthias Glasner on Der freie Wille. So we are on the same wavelength and complement one another."

“Cut!” exclaims director Quentin Tarantino, magically transforming Hellstrom into 33-year-old actor August Diehl. It was all just another day on the set of Inglorious Basterds, Diehl’s latest film which has made him a global celebrity. Though his international success is fairly recent, he has been an influence in the German thespian world for over a decade.

Like father, like son
Born in Berlin on 4 January 1976, August Diehl was the final addition to a highly creative family. His father Hans Diel is a well-known actor, his mother worked as a costume designer and his brother went on to become a composer. A career in creative arts was almost inevitable.
As a result of both parent’s jobs, the Diehls moved a lot. August spent his childhood moving back and fourth between Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Bavaria, and France. The family finally settled down back in Berlin, where August passed the Abitur – A-levels in Germany.

From the stage to the screen

Known today for his work on the silver screen, Diehl gathered his first acting experience in the theatre. When he was 18, he made his theatrical debut, playing Franz Mohr in a high school production of Friedrich Schiller’s Die Räuber. After high school, Diehl enrolled in the renowned Ernst Busch Hochschule für Schauspielkunst acting school.
Diehl made his movie premier in 1998, playing the role of Karl Koch in 23. His portrayal of the young computer hacker earned Diehl the “Best Actor” award at both the 1998 Bavarian Film Awards as well as the 1999 German Film Awards. In 2000, after appearing in Kalt ist der Abendhauch, the European Film Promotion named Diehl one of the “Shooting Stars” of European film.
Between 2002 and 2004 he appeared in such movies as Tattoo, Love the Hard Way, Distant Lights, and Love in Thoughts (earning him the 2004 Undine Award for Best Young Actor in a feature film and the 2005 German Film Critics Association Awards for Best Actor). Diehl’s star continued to shine brighter and in 2006 Gala magazine named him – along with Martina Gedeck – as one of the most important German-speaking actors currently working.

The real Diehl
So far in his career, August Diehl has portrayed a wide variety of characters. From a high-tech criminal, to a homicide detective, to a Gestapo officer, Diehl has shown versatility by playing many different roles at a young age.
Diehl told German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel, “I am fascinated by ambivalent characters. I find it interesting to portray the dark side of good characters, or at least something that can throw them off balance.”
Off screen, however, he leads a life that is much more typical than you might expect. When Diehl is not working he is most likely to spend time with his wife – actress Julia Malik – and their infant daughter Elsa Augusta. When not with his family, he might be found listening to a few Radiohead albums with good friend and fellow Inglorious Basterds cast member Daniel Brühl, or reading his favourite poems by Else Lasker.
While there are many in Hollywood hoping to bring Diehl on board for their next project, don’t expect to see him in the next big summer blockbuster. Making his theatre professors proud, August tends to stay away from big-budget movies, instead focusing on projects that carry a heavier message than pay check.

Play "Major Barbara"

Peter Zadek with Eva Mattes

Peter Zadek was a German theater director who recently staged an acclaimed production of George Bernad Shaw's “Major Barbara” in Zurich with August Diehl. He died at the age of 83 in Hamburg last night after a long illness. Zadek was an expert in the plays of Shakespeare. Among his most famous productions were “Othello” in 1976 at the Hamburg Schauspielhaus and a 1984 staging of “Ghetto” by Joshua Sobol in Hamburg and Berlin. According to German Culture Minister Bernd Neuman, he managed to combine popular theater with high intellectual standards.
